By JOHN KNOWLES
I needed a sub to complement my two 15" PA cabinets, and was on a very tight budget. It had to be powered, 18", and easily transported. This sub did not have very many reviews across the internet, but the few that existed were positive. Seems that American Audio did a very good reproduction of a popular, much more expensive Mackie sub. It's a midrange price for 18" powered subs. This thing blew me away. First off, it's really heavy. Solid cabinet construction, durable finish. Second, its performance is way beyond its price. In my testing, has no trouble reproducing deep lows at high output (25Hz @ -10dbu, 35Hz @ 0dbu per documentation). This sub produces deep, tight bass and good thump and its ports direct all that sound pressure out the front. It has four heavy duty casters (2 fixed/2 swivel) that bolt into the back of the cabinet, and is easy to tilt onto its back for moving it. There are four rubber feet bolted onto the underside. It has passive/active cooling, there is a fan that operates to wash the recessed heat sink with air as it heats up. It doesn't break a sweat running it near clip. On the signal side of things, there is a rotary level control for the sub, and indicator LEDS for power, signal, limit and protect mode. It has XLR ins/outs with full range and high pass outs (>125Hz). With free super saver shipping (this ships via a truck freight service) it is a steal. I dare you to find a better sub at this price and even a bit higher.
I've used it a few times now doing volunteer DJing - and everyone is always impressed at the bass. I may purchase a second one just to have the capacity to thump as hard as I want... My two PA cabs are 15", so one of these subs is proven plenty, but two will be much more fun - and won't break my bank.

WOW! What a great sub! This sucker is HUGE! I bought one for my personal system [..] and I couldn't be happier. I had considered buying at least 2 subs for my project since I have such a huge volume of space for my system, until I stumbled onto THIS sub. At the price I paid [..]plus free shipping - I couldn't get any two "standard" size subs, shipped, for that price. This sucker is actually larger then I need, but it has all the punch I could ever hope for - it will never be lacking - heh heh. Anyway, it's designed more for PA use rather then home, but will work on a home setup just fine (pick up a couple XLR to RCA adapters). If you have room for it - get it!

There are many good things to say about this excellent sub, and only one negative one.
First, the unit comes very, very well packed and protected for shipping (credit to Bullet Transportation for an excellent expirience). The sub arrived in flawless condition. After the workout of extracting it from its packaging, I installed the casters that are included with the sub. The casters are quite necesary, but here comes the only negative: after such a great job of quality and craftsmanship, the cheap locking casters (they noticeably dig into the rubber wheel when locked) and bolts (these were second rate and looked as though they could start rusting any minute) were unworthy of the top shelf subwoofer you are producing, American Audio.
The sub is magnificent. It was very easy to place into position and install the xlr cable. When the party got going that I needed to bring professional grade sound, this sub delivered absolute club quality sound. In all the years that I have been spinning, I have never had this rich a range of bass from ANY portable as the American Audio unit produces. You dont have to be cranking out 80 freestyle (which I was) to appreciate the low end performance. I went through many different jonras of music and every one of them were augmented due to the quality, depth and performance of this subwoofer.
I cannot recommend this unit enough. I will be sure to update this entry from time to time. i must admit that the few reviews I saw for this sub throughout the internet made me slightly hesitant to pull the trigger, I am so happy i took the chance. Congrats to American Audio, what a product..! Please update the hardware package.
UPDATE on gig 16Feb13:
OK. Transporting the sub to the gig was very simple. Two can very easily lift the sub onto your mode of transportation. The casters really save you elbow grease.
The sound was SO GOOD throughout the night, even the older folk did not complain. The sound was quite powerful mind you, but if was crystal clear, undistorted and full of punch. I even got complements on how awesome the sound was from the catering staff (usually these guys dont even speak to each other).
Set up was as simple as connecting your XLR and your power source. My power source is ALWAYS steady and clean as I use a Furman M-8Dx Standard Level Power Conditioning, 15 Amp, 9 Outlets with Wall Wart Spacing, Pullout Lights, Digital Voltmeter.
No surprises nor adjustments were necesary once I made the initial setup before the gig started. I promise you the sheer quality will bring a few more clients my way. I give my highest recommendation to this sub. WOW...now on to the next one on 2Mar13. This one will be chuck full of 80s freestyle, Hi NRG, Disco and lots of music that goes THUMP...
